What can the night teach us about life on campus?

Explore the University of Melbourne’s Parkville campus after hours through a series of interactive night walks guided by researchers from the Melbourne Centre for Cities. Developed through The Night Shift research project, the walks invite you to experience the campus as a working night-time environment shaped by safety, mobility, lighting, access and care.

Starting at MPavilion Parkville, each walk explores a different challenge of designing city spaces for life after dark. See familiar spaces in new ways through themes ranging from nightlife and harm reduction to cultural life, labour, climate and biodiversity.

The walks are guided by an interdisciplinary team of University of Melbourne researchers spanning criminology, urban studies, social planning, architecture and visual culture. Along the way, they’ll highlight the people and systems that keep the city running at night, including the often-unseen workers who sustain the night-time economy. The walk will also include some prompts and exercises for you to write, share or draw your thoughts. The experience returns to the pavilion for warm drinks, conversation and a shared mapping activity to reflect on what it means to inhabit the campus after hours.

Walks

Take a 2 hour tour at 6pm on Wednesday 15 April or Wednesday 29 April.

While every effort will be made to accommodate mobility levels, the tour will involve approximately 3km of walking, including across uneven surfaces.

Please note the walks will touch on topics of sexual violence, harms and may be distressing for some participants.
