Our Work

Reconciliation, education and conservation of Indigenous knowledge for future generations.

Our team works with communities of origin to honour the different worldviews that are present in the collection. In partnership with community, we reunite cultural knowledge with objects in our care. Highlighting the diverse languages and unique cultural identities, sophisticated kinship systems, philosophies, experiences and ongoing survival of Aboriginal Australia.

Our Values

We lead with deep hearts, work with solid intent at a measured pace, and make decisions that prioritise the meaning of Country to collections.

Dr. Vanessa Russ, Director, Indigenous Collections

We seek the right people to work alongside Aboriginal leadership to ensure informed decision making and self-determination.

We acknowledge that our work is on behalf of others for the benefit of culture and art.

We ensure that access and use of the collections aligns to rematriated knowledge practices and is long-term and sustainable.

We facilitate meaningful collaboration that recognises senior knowledge holders as researchers and educators.

We engage future generations of Indigenous people, university students and members of the public.

We create functional spaces so collections reflect the living cultures and relational experience from which they are derived.
