The Place Brand Design

artwork four concentric circles represent a meeting place

The Place will celebrate the diversity of Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander artmaking and material culture.

Located on the University of Melbourne Parkville campus, The Place will include museum-grade storage, collection, and archive care, learning and meeting spaces, research, community accommodation, ceremonial grounds, and an extensive exhibition space.

The Place brand design, created by Marcus Lee Design, represents a meeting place, with four concentric circles gathering together. Marcus is a descendant of the Karajarri people in Western Australia.

At the heart of the design, the smaller centre circle represents the Place for Indigenous Art and Culture at the University of Melbourne.

The outer three circular rings represent three categories of the collections – art, artefacts and documented images and audio.

The coloured cultural expressions, integrated throughout the design, connect the collections towards the Place for Indigenous Art and Culture.

The pathways, patterns and colours reflect upon the varied Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and cultures, as well as Country, deserts, and waters.
