The Buxton Collection consists of 300 works of contemporary Australian art by 53 significant artists. Donated to the University by Michael Buxton, a passionate art collector, the Buxton Collection forms a significant part of the University’s Art Collection and since 2018 has been housed in a purpose-built museum.
The Buxton Contemporary Art Museum was designed by Fender Katsalidis and is located on the corner of Southbank Boulevard and Dodds Street.
Michael Buxton said of the donation:
“By donating this magnificent collection to the University of Melbourne, we are ensuring its longevity as a dynamic collection that will evolve and grow. It will educate future generations of students and serve as a resource for all Australians aspiring to understand or collect challenging contemporary art.”
