Hugh Ramsay Collection

The Hugh Ramsay Collection links the last decade of the 19th century and the first of the 20th. It includes fine examples of portraiture, academic drawings and studies for major paintings by this remarkable Australian artist.

Regarded as one of Australia’s finest tonal painters, Ramsay’s career was cut short by his premature death in 1906 at the age of 28. Ramsay studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne, in the late 1890s. He then worked in London and Paris, where his career seemed assured after success at the New Salon, but ill heath forced him to return to Melbourne.
