‘Garden State: the Wardian Case, Australia and the Plant Trade’
Dr Luke Keogh, 2017 Redmond Barry Fellow
Dr Keogh will present the outcomes of his research into the Wardian case, a simple portable greenhouse used for moving live plants. Invented in1829 by the London doctor Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward, the case revolutionised the movement of plants around the globe. Australia, with its long history of gardening and horticulture, offers a fascinating location to understand the history of the global plant trade.
